AvoBlog
The following weblog contains a diary about my avocado grove that is probably boring for anyone but me.
Today I attended the grower's meeting at Logsdens restaurant in Santa Paula. What a great meeting. The main topics were the study of exotic avocado pests from South America, and proper timing of fertilizer application. At the end of the day, it looks like April, July, Aug, and Nov. will be the optimal time to apply nitrogen sources to my trees. See www.avocadosource.com for more information about avocado trees than you ever wanted to know!
pH is a measurement of the acid level of the soil. I have purchase a pH meter to check out my situation. Details Here. I love it when tech stuff meets the grove!
Added a page today with some shots of creatures great and small found on our property. Details Here.
Today I purchased two tensionmeters to measure water levels for irrigation. Here is a link to the pictures.
I absolutely must chase gophers tonight, but I am already tired. Sigh.
We arrived home from Belize yesterday evening, and my big plan was to apply a light application of Nitrogen to all the trees. I passed out instead. Today I applied 1/4 cup to all of block A in hopes of helping them out a bit. We'll see how it goes. My revised plan is to fertilize the remaining trees this week, and get all new pictures.
I really can't do much about the freeze except sit and wait. I have turned on the irrigation, which will theoretically bring temperatures up a bit. Trees are pretty much dead at two hours of 26 degrees, depending upon the variety. Hopefully the hilly layout of the orchard will drain the cold away.
